As a child I loved. . .
. . . going out in the woods and marshes surrounding my home. I would draw fungi and other plants that intrigued me. It wasn’t until I was a young adult that I figured out what I was trying to capture in my sketches. It is the uniqueness between each plant form.
Fungi/mushroom and floral forms grow in beautiful eccentric ways. They have a whimsical quality. I choose certain fungal or floral forms that excite me to represent relationships in my life. Using those ideas create my composition and complement them with the color and texture of fabric with embroidery. I use hues that symbolize variations of clay, soil, petals, and stems.
Trying to represent the whimsical quality that I see in each fungi/plant with the people around me. Using texture to create the patterns that differ from fungi to fungi, from flower to flower and person to person. I am attracted to these forms because they are organic, diverse and complex.
I use different techniques such as gluing different types of textile materials, sewing into stretched cotton fabric, using acrylic based paint and ink to create inspired shapes and clouds of pigment that are visually beautiful to stimulate the eye.
To me different types of fungi and flowers have their own character just like people and I am intrigued by the variations. Having their shapes as a point of departure, I reinvent patterns that are diverse, playful and festive.
